Recently, I’ve been thinking about the interrelationships between various kinds of creative pursuits. Do some arts follow closely upon the heels of others? If you knit or crochet, are you more likely to take up spinning? If you love to cook, do you branch out into vegetable and herb gardening to provide fresh ingredients for your kitchen? Or, do you pick hobbies that are different from your primary passion, like writing and playing piano for me?
What patterns do you see in what you choose to spend your time on?
I’ve recently taken up knitting. It’s something that I didn’t want to learn in hot, humid Mayotte, but now that we are back in France and the air is crisp and fresh, the timing seems perfect. And while my brain doesn’t seem to want to do fiction right now, knitting and drawing both seem OK.
Cooking is still up there as a hobby for me, and oddly enough, I want to return to crocheting.
I have enjoyed writing, graphic design, dabbling in piano/keyboard and crochet, also love baking, decorating for company (or hostessing, particularly meals), and used to like drawing (before I learned I have ZERO talent for it).
Don’t know where that falls on the overall spectrum, but I do know that my mind likes multiple disciplines: math, arts, science, literature, poetry, etc. My grandmother both wrote and painted. My father is an amazing drawing artist (multiple styles), graphic artist, web designer, guitar player, keyboard player, AND writer. My sister does same as Dad minus the keyboard. So I would think that those that tend to be artistic tend to like more than one form of art.
Oh, and the whole family does the cooking thing. π
Miqa,
I only want to work with yarn during the fall. Hot weather and wool do not go together well in my mind! I’m off crocheting for now because I want to save my wrists for things I like doing better–like writing or playing.
Megs,
I’m interested in a multitude of disciplines as well. I get excited by math/science AND literature/history, something which will be a great asset to me further down the homeschooling road. π
Yes, yes, and again yes! I got such a broad spectrum of interests BECAUSE I was home-schooled (and read like crazy ;)).
